Best Photo Locations in Metro Detroit for Families, Seniors & Maternity Sessions

Looking for the perfect backdrop for your next photo session in Metro Detroit? Whether you're planning senior portraits, family photos, maternity, or engagement sessions, Metro Detroit has something for everyone — from wildflower fields to iconic city rooftops. Here are my absolute favorite locations that I recommend to clients year after year.

Stony Creek MetroparkShelby Township

If you're a nature lover, Stony Creek Metropark is a dream come true. This expansive park features evergreen forests, tall grassy fields, trails, and even a sandy beach by the lake. August is especially magical here — the wildflowers bloom in vibrant color, and the sunsets are absolutely golden. That said, it’s stunning in every season, even winter.

Perfect for: Engagements, Families, Maternity

Beverly Hills Nature PreserveBeverly Hills

This hidden gem feels like stepping into a secret garden. With wide open fields, tall seasonal wildflowers, and a charming white barn, it offers a timeless, relaxed backdrop. Fall is hands-down the best time to shoot here thanks to the jaw-dropping foliage. In summer, I usually suggest avoiding green outfits, so you don’t blend into the scenery.

Perfect for: Families, Maternity

Downtown Detroit — Urban, Stylish, and Full of Energy

If you're looking for an urban setting with personality, Downtown Detroit is full of photo opportunities. From bold murals to elegant architecture, it’s walkable, versatile, and beautiful all year round.

My favorite downtown photo spots:

  • The Z Garage – Colorful murals + rooftop skyline views. Note: this location requires prior permission.

  • Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) – Elegant, timeless, and perfect for seniors and couples.

  • Parker’s Alley – String lights and a cozy alley vibe; great for quick secondary shots.

Bonus: No bugs! :)

Innovation Hills — Rochester Hills

This newer park has a peaceful, modern vibe. A beautiful wooden boardwalk weaves through natural grasses, woods, and even a shallow creek — perfect if you want something a little different. We’ll do a gentle half-mile loop, so bring comfy shoes. While it’s great for intimate sessions, it’s not ideal for large groups.

Perfect for: Maternity, Couples

Nature CenterRochester Hills

This quiet park is a favorite for families with younger children. It offers trails, wooden bridges, winding river paths, and beautiful trees — all within a short walking distance. It’s usually quiet, which makes it perfect for kids who feel shy or get distracted easily.
